L-Lysine is an essential amino acid, which means that humans cannot synthesize it. L-Lysine is a necessary building block for all protein in the body. It plays a major role in calcium absorption; formation of collagen (the fibrous protein which makes up bone) for bone, cartilage and connective tissue, building muscle protein, recovering from surgery or sports injuries, and the body's production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies.

L-Lysine is most known for its use in the relief of cold sores and herpes viruses.
